One of the worst things about getting old is that, as time goes by, you lose hope of getting old. I don’t know if I understand myself, but something similar came to me from old Al, one of those nights when even the stopped clocks couldn’t prevent time from piling up on them.
That’s when old Al told me about The desert of the Tatars, the novel by Dino Buzzati, a story where the protagonist is time. “Fucking time, boy,” he told me with resigned tiredness, “fucking time, which runs faster and faster and swallows the days as if they were smoke.” I took note and picked up the novel that I didn’t read until the other day, carried away by Christmas and the memory of old Al.
