Many made of adobe, the amalgamated earth of most of the houses in the rural villages of the High Atlas have not withstood the shocks of the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday night. The stones and dust have buried more than 2,000 people, most of the dead are concentrated in the Al Hazoud region, populated by small villages southwest of Marrakech, some completely destroyed. Images captured from the air show the great devastation.

From the sky you can see how the villagers form a line to search the rubble for signs of life or to be able to rescue the deceased and bury their loved ones. Other neighbors wait outside, under the blazing sun, some on rugs and the very few belongings they have left.

International aid has begun to mobilize this Sunday to collaborate in the search for survivors and in the work of clearing debris in the areas affected by the earthquake, although hopes of finding survivors are fading. In some rural villages, those trapped under the rubble are presumed dead because the dust from the adobe has suffocated them. The Red Cross recalled yesterday that the first 48 hours after the earthquake are crucial to find someone alive.

Rescue teams have begun to deploy, after Morocco has accepted help from four countries: Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
