The body in charge of ensuring the safety of drivers, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), has implemented a significant increase in the number of radars throughout the Spanish territory with the aim of reducing mortality and accidents on the roads. In this sense, according to the data revealed by the ‘II Observatory of Radars’ prepared by the company Coyote, in Spain there are almost 3,000 radars, of which 2,010 are fixed, 400 are traffic light, 243 are belt and mobile and 167 are section. However, there is a new element to add to this list: the crossing radars.

These tools have been specifically designed to regulate the crossings considered dangerous and with a reduced visibility. As revealed by the entity, these radars will be located at the crossings identified as critical points with high accident rate and its main function will be to detect the presence of vehicles at the intersection to alert approaching drivers.

Although these initiatives aim to increase road safety and reduce the number of deaths on the roads, which reached almost 2,000 deaths in 2022, some drivers have expressed their discontent. This is because, although these speed cameras have a different main function, they also record speed violations, which has generated a lot of fines y loss of points of the driver’s license.

The increase in the number of fines has caused a 15.6% increase in traffic complaints, reaching a total of 5,542,178. In addition, it has been registered highest grossing of the last ten years, exceeding 500 million euros. In this sense, speed continues to be the main cause of these sanctions, representing two out of every three infractions. They are followed by penalties for not having passed the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV), driving without a license, not using a seat belt and driving using a mobile phone.

Finally, it should be noted that, on the roads, it is essential to be as careful as possible, respecting the Speed limitsusing the seat belt and avoiding distractions behind the wheel, such as the use of a mobile phone. Since these individual actions, added to the control and prevention measures of the DGT, contribute to maintaining a safer road environment for everyone.
