The small increase in sales added to the boost achieved by the increase in sales prices has achieved an increase in the collection from the registration tax, which has risen 14.7% more, to 463 million euros between January and August, although it is only 8% if compared to the figures from a year ago. According to data from the Tax Agency consulted by Efe, the average payment to be paid has grown by just six euros, from 725 to 731 euros.

The bulk of this increase has been due to the registration of cars with the most polluting engines, since 293 million have been obtained from gasoline engines, while with diesel engines the amount rises to 168 million. Barely one million has been received from electric vehicles and those that run on liquefied gas, so the green transition towards a fleet of non-polluting vehicles can leave this tax practically at zero if its tax legislation is not changed.

And all despite the fact that in 2022 the new emissions regulations were in force for the entire year, for which vehicles until then exempt from payment began to be paid and which in 2021 were only in force for six months due to the moratorium that was applied. The amount of the registration tax is determined by the CO2 emissions generated by the vehicle for each kilometer traveled, so buyers of more polluting models pay more than the rest. Specifically, if the car does not emit more than 120 grams per kilometer of CO2 (g/km), you do not have to pay, but, if the car generates between 121 and 160 g/km, the buyer will add a 4 .75% of the price of the vehicle without taxes to the final invoice for the car. When the vehicle emits between 160 and 200 g/km of CO2 into the atmosphere, an additional 9.75% is paid, and if it emits more than 200 g/km, 15.75% is added.

The Community of Madrid is the autonomous community that has received the largest sum from the registration tax, up to 182 million euros in the first eight months of 2023, 39.3% of the national total, thanks to being the territory in which that the most cars have been registered, 248,881 units. They are followed by Catalonia, with 68 million euros, and Andalusia, with almost 57 million euros, which are also the second and third autonomous communities in the classification by number of registrations, with 82,946 and 70,306 cars, respectively.

However, Cantabrians are the buyers who pay the most for the registration tax, 989 euros of average payment to be paid in the period between January and August. La Rioja, with 871 euros, and Asturias, with 855 euros, are the autonomous communities that have the highest registration tax after Cantabria, while the Canary Islands, with 412 euros, and the Balearic Islands, with 493 euros, have the lowest amount. pay. The difference to pay between a driver from Cantabria and one from the Canary Islands is 577 euros.
