ANALYSIS – The Hungarian Prime Minister is meeting his Eastern allies on the sidelines of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

There is the spectacle offered by the athletes on the track of a brand new 36,000-seat stadium, and the diplomatic marathon that Viktor Orban is running on the sidelines of the world athletics championships, which are taking place this week in Budapest.“During a major world event, a country invites its friends here or welcomes all interested persons here”, explained Viktor Orban on public radio. His friends present illustrate the obvious oriental tropism of the Magyar leader: the heads of state of the “political friends” of Central Asia (Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Bosnian Serb Milorad Dodik, and as a guest- star Recep Tayyip Erdogan, among others. The Turkish president’s security service badly molested a pro-Kurdish activist until the Hungarian anti-terrorist unit intervened.
We don’t know if friends declined the invitation or if they just didn’t show interest, anyway not a head of state of the European Union…
