Northern Union. Minutes after taking off from the border area of El Amatillo, between El Salvador and Honduras, the helicopter carrying the main suspect of Cosavi bias, Manuel Coto, crashed in the canton of San Eduardo in Pasaquina.
The nine occupants of the aircraft died and they are the director of the PNC, Mauricio Antonio Arriaza Chicas; commissioners Rómulo Pompilio Romero Torres and Douglas Omar García Funes (“Carabinero”); Corporal Abel Antonio Arévalo (“Tax”); lieutenants (aviation pilots) Jonathan Alexander Raymundo Morán and Alexis Alberto Quijano López; Gerson Deputy Sergeant Ricardo Batres Lucero; journalist David Heman Cruz Guevara; and former general manager of the Santa Victoria Cooperative (Cosavi) Manuel Coto.
The bodies were rescued this morning and transferred to the Third Infantry Brigade, in San Miguel Centro. Due to the death of the high authorities, President Nayib Bukele ordered mourning for three days by flying the National Flag at half mast throughout the country and in Salvadoran consulates and embassies around the world.
The Ambassador of the United States to El Salvador, William Duncan, sent a message to the Salvadoran people after the tragic accident: «We were shocked by the news of the death of Director Arriaza Chicas, Commissioners García Funes, Romero Torres and their other companions. Sincere condolences to her family, to the National Civil Police“, to the government of El Salvador and to all Salvadorans for this terrible tragedy.”
