Brigitte Autran is sounding the alarm. The president of the Committee for monitoring and anticipating health risks (Covars) deplores this Sunday the “discouraging” level of vaccination against Covid-19. She also takes the opportunity to call “to strengthen the wearing of a mask, as well as barrier gestures”.
“It’s really sad that the French do not get vaccinated, or not enough”, regrets the scientist in an interview with the Sunday newspaper. “We have the same problem with the flu: there is a lower level of vaccination this year, compared to previous years. The French really need to protect themselves.”
A recall campaign since October 3
According to health authorities, last Monday, 2 million people had received a booster shot against Covid-19 since the launch of the booster campaign on October 3 with bivalent vaccines. Of these, 1.8 million people had been injected with such vaccines, which target the original strain and the Omicron strain.
Faced with the resurgence of Covid-19 cases, “we ask to reinforce the wearing of masks, as well as barrier gestures and vaccination”, pleads Brigitte Autran while Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne launched a “solemn appeal” this week. wearing a mask in closed places, in particular public transport. “The return of the compulsory mask is a political decision and it is not for us to decide. But we must go towards wearing a mask as much as possible in closed places, where there is significant promiscuity, ”she abounds in the columns of the JDD.
The president of Covars also indicates that the body which replaced the scientific council will give “a complete opinion” on the epidemic situation at the end of the week or at the start of the next.
“Caregivers must be vaccinated”
Finally on the controversial question of the reintegration of non-vaccinated caregivers, the Covars is sticking to its position. According to Brigitte Autran, “it is also a political decision, but we consider that caregivers must be vaccinated. It is a question of responsibility. That of the caregiver vis-à-vis his patients is to protect them and to protect himself”.
