The decision was feared by all supporters of FC Sochaux-Montbéliard (FCSM), it is now recorded. During its appeal to the National Management Control Department (DNCG), Tuesday July 11, the Doubs club saw the financial “gendarme” of French football confirm its administrative relegation to National, already pronounced on June 28. The DNCG judged that the FCSM was unable to provide the necessary financial guarantees for its 2023-2024 budget.
Before this new passage in front of the DNCG, FC Sochaux had tried to bring together the 22 million euros which it lacked to return to equilibrium and obtain its maintenance in Ligue 2. The Sochaux leaders thus separated from around twenty players in twelve days and tried to convince Nenking, the Chinese group that has owned the club since 2019, to put some money back into the pot to make up the shortfall.

“In view of the situation of the Chinese real estate market, which deteriorated again in the second quarter of 2023, the Nenking group was unable to generate adequate cash to fill the forecast deficit”writes the club in a press release published on Tuesday, after the DNCG’s appeal decision.
The support of former club players
Club supporters showed up at training on Tuesday morning to show their support for the players, even before relegation was announced. Because the latest news did not encourage optimism. Cubs fans can now fear the worst, as the club announces in its press release that it is working “to present a new budget allowing it to evolve into National in 2023-2024”.
If this were not the case, the FCSM would be forced to file for bankruptcy and return to National 3, the fifth division of French football. A disaster for a club founded under the impetus of the car manufacturer Peugeot, in 1928, the first to become professional in France and one of the engines for the creation of the French championship in the early 1930s.
The FCSM has won two French Cups (1937, 2007), twice the title of French champion (1935, 1938), a League Cup (2004) and has seen some great players come out of its training center, the first to have been created in France, in 1974.
