“She is still in the hospital, she is receiving routine postpartum care, there are no more serious complications, her life is not in danger,” Monika Stasiūnaitė, interim head of the Children’s and Women’s Clinic of the Republic Šiauliai Hospital, told Elta on Tuesday.

According to her, the newborn and the mother were brought to the hospital in separate ambulances.

“The mother was brought in a little earlier, and a few minutes later the newborn was delivered. He was evaluated by our neonatologist, he was without signs of life, there was no heart activity, we could no longer provide him with any help. The newborn’s body was handed over to forensic experts and the police.

ELTA reminds that after the death of a baby born at home, the Minister of Health Protection, Aurimas Pečkauskas, promises to instruct the State Accreditation Service for Health Care Activities to carry out an inspection in order to find out the circumstances of the event and look for opportunities to avoid similar disasters in the future.

According to preliminary data, the ambulance was called to the village in the Kelmė district several times, but the woman gave birth at home, the baby was taken to the hospital in Šiauliai, but did not survive.

“The description of the procedure for the provision of ambulance services provides that the time from the registration of the call to the start of the first medical aid in life-threatening cases should be up to 15 minutes in urban residential areas, up to 25 minutes in rural residential areas. We express our sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased newborn,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Emergency Medical Service (EMS) operates as a separate legal entity under the Ministry of Health.

According to the information system of the General Help Center, at 7:39 p.m. a call was received from the village of Šedbari in Kelmė district. A woman called who was having contractions. She was connected to the emergency medical service.

As Eltas was informed by BPC, at 7:59 p.m. a second call was received. The male caller reported that the contractions were already very frequent and was about to go into labor and was connected to the dispatcher of the emergency medical service.

“The dispatcher advised how to prepare for birth at home. Conversation after 15 min. has stopped, the further sequence of events is unclear,” reads BPC’s reply to Elta.
