MADRID, 30 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic has expressed this Saturday its support for the Moroccan Government’s plan for Western Sahara.

“The Autonomy Initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007 constitutes a realistic, credible and serious solution to reach a negotiated result between the parties,” read a statement published on the Ministry’s website to congratulate the monarch. Moroccan, Mohamed VI, for the 24th anniversary of his coronation.

“In this sense, the Dominican Republic reiterates its absolute recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” continues the official note, which ensures that Foreign Affairs “will evaluate the possibility of opening a Dominican consulate in the city of Dakhla, Western Sahara, as one of the priorities within the framework of the expansion plans of this Ministry”.

For his part, during his speech on Throne Day, Mohamed VI demanded “seriousness” when it comes to his “territorial integrity” and stressed that “it is this seriousness that, in a context of legitimacy, has unleashed a cascade of acknowledgments of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Southern Provinces”, using the case of Israel as an example.

Israel formally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in mid-July, in a letter sent by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Mohamed VI himself, as announced by the Alaouite Royal House on the 17th of the same month.
