One of the main escape routes passes through Turkey, but a new risk has arisen on the crossing.

Many of these Afghans end up being kidnapped by armed groups on the Turkish-Iranian border and subjected to torture to press ransom demands for their relatives.

In this BBC investigation, journalist Soran Qurbani, who 12 years ago made the same crossing to flee Afghanistan, traveled to the Turkish border and met other Afghan immigrants and family members who faced similar situations.
