The dramatic corona bill from RKI boss Wieler – domestic politics

by time news

“It’s five past twelve!”

With this sentence, the head of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler, began his alarming speech at the federal press conference that morning.

The fourth Corona-Wave roll “now with full force”. And the delta variant is even more contagious.

To illustrate how dramatically the situation in Germany is currently developing, Wieler makes an calculation:

From the current around 50,000 (today, November 12: 48,640) new infections every day at least 3000 would have to be treated in hospitals in the future. At least 350 would be treated in the intensive care units and 200 people would die.

“Of course these numbers could vary,” admits Wieler. But the numbers were based on what one had learned in the past.

Wieler appealed to the people in Germany: “Reduce your contacts.” You should also wear a mask if you are only allowed access to vaccinated and convalescent people (2G). However, 2G is no longer sufficient in particularly polluted regions. If you suspect you have a cold, you should do a PCR test.

At major events, for example, the number of people must be reduced or a ban must be considered. “We know that so-called superspreader events take place particularly indoors.”

Wieler continues: “It would be best to cancel certain major events.”

One should also consider closing bars or clubs in particularly polluted regions. People should also get tested before private get-togethers.

Intensive care units already full in many areas

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) made it clear that the situation in the intensive care units is also coming to a head. Many are already full. The minister explicitly mentioned the situation in the hotspots in Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia.

Nationwide, 50 percent of intensive care units are currently reporting an acute shortage of staff.

Another problem is that the average age of the people there is falling. The result: the length of stay increases.

Wieler and Spahn once again appealed to all unvaccinated people in Germany to get vaccinated.

Spahn: “The situation is already leading to an insane conflict between the doctors.” For example, important operations for cancer patients would have to be postponed because unvaccinated, seriously ill corona patients would have to be treated.
