Within the framework of Alternative Basic Education Day, Pronabec scholarship holders comment on the importance of having studied at a CEBA to achieve their goals.

Every April 18, Alternative Basic Education Day is commemorated, a teaching modality aimed at people who did not access or did not complete their primary or secondary education, and who seek to complete their studies without stopping working. An opportunity that has allowed several people to resume their academic plans, as did three scholarship holders from the National Scholarship and Educational Loan Program (Pronabec) of the Ministry of Education, who tell how having managed to complete their studies impacted their lives.

“I am changing my circle of life”

Resuming her school studies two years after leaving them meant for Vanessa Isla Maiz the opportunity to achieve the goal she had set herself since she was a child: to become a professional. After the death of her mother, the young woman from Huánuco, at the age of 15, was taken to a shelter that allowed her to continue school in an Alternative Basic Education Center (CEBA).

Her constant effort to be an outstanding student and maintain a high academic performance allowed her to access the Pronabec Scholarship 18, Protection modality —previously called Shelter—, which finances all academic and non-academic expenses and socio-emotional and well-being support to study a professional career in the country.

“Studying at a CEBA has helped me a lot. It has given me, like many young people, the opportunity to finish school, and in this way, continue to progress in my studies. After finishing school I dedicated myself to studying, which allowed me to win Scholarship 18, thanks to which I am changing my circle of life”, comments the eighth-year law student at the Antenor Orrego Private University.

The 22-year-old young talent points out that her vocation to defend rights was born when she learned the life stories of her companions in the shelter, with whom she felt very familiar. “Finishing my career as a lawyer, I would like to be a support for those girls, boys and adolescents who are in the shelter, to ensure their rights. The hostel has been my second family,” she adds.

“They will be able to accomplish what they set out to do”

The desire to get ahead and improve every day for her personal development and that of her family were the two reasons why Elis Llamoctanta Ruíz decided to become a successful professional. Due to economic needs, he had to go to work in another province of his native Cajamarca at the age of 15. After some time and with better economic stability, the young man resumed his goal of studying a professional career.

The first step he took was to enroll in a CEBA to complete his basic studies. “Finishing the CEBA was an important achievement and a boost to be able to prepare myself in the pre-university academy and be able to apply to the university,” she mentions. His perseverance and dedication allowed him to enter the Administration career at the National University of Cajamarca.

Due to her high academic performance, Elis won the Pronabec Permanence Scholarship, which covers academic and non-academic expenses for the best students from public universities. “Having obtained the scholarship means a very important achievement, since it helped me a lot. I advise young people who are studying at a CEBA to never stop pursuing their dreams. Always with effort, discipline and perseverance they will be able to accomplish what they set out to do”, adds the Administration graduate.

“I am fulfilling part of my goals”

Faced with the need to help her family, Elizabeth Santiago Gomez, a native of La Libertad, left the Regular Basic Education school to continue her secondary studies at a CEBA. However, these changes did not mean leaving behind her dream of becoming a professional.

“It allowed me to finish school, which made it possible for me to apply and enter a university. Now I am fulfilling part of my goals”, indicates the student of the seventh cycle of the career of Agronomy of the National University of Trujillo. Elizabeth kept pushing herself and getting high marks in her college classes. These characteristics allowed her to win the Permanence Scholarship, with which she was able to stop working and focus on her studies.

“To the young people who are also studying at a CEBA, I want to tell them not to give up. If they set their minds to it, they will manage to be professionals. With a lot of effort and dedication they will achieve all their goals and achieve great goals in life”, mentions Elizabeth.
