A bus driver simply left his vehicle with a 42-person tour group in a parking lot on Autobahn 81 near Gerlingen in the Stuttgart region – and walked away.

A bus operator called the police on Thursday evening around 7 p.m. after his driver exceeded his maximum working hours and ran away, officials said on Friday. The man initially had a driver friend come as a replacement, but the bus company prohibited him from driving. The two then left the vehicle and its occupants to fend for themselves in a parking lot.

According to police, the company then wanted to organize another replacement driver. When he was still not there at 10 p.m., three hours later, the travelers called the officials themselves.

In the end we took a taxi home

The DRK then provided the group, which mainly consisted of senior citizens between the ages of 70 and 80, with drinks and food. Some travelers said they hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast at the hotel because the bus driver only stopped at rest areas without food options, according to a DRK spokesman.

There are hardly any substitute drivers left in the group. Finally, the travelers were taken to Stuttgart Central Station in taxis, the last at around 2:30 a.m.

According to the DRK, the tour group is said to have previously been on vacation in French-speaking Switzerland and was actually taken to the Magdeburg area by bus. The SWR quotes a traveler with this information.
