The participation of Dutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde (29 years old) in the Olympic Games in Paris became the cause of many comments and discussions.
The reason – in 2016, he admitted that he raped a 12-year-old British girl 3 times. He received a sentence of 4 years, but because of his guilty plea and cooperation with the justice system, he spent only 12 months in prison.
Van de Velde lives outside the Olympic Village in Saint-Denis for this reason.

His wife is the German policewoman Kim Behrens, who is 2 years older than him. The couple has been together for 6 years. In March, Kim and Steven became the parents of a baby boy.
