A team of researchers from the University of Southern California has just shown that the Earth’s core oscillates, changing its direction of rotation, something that goes against the most accepted models, according to which the core constantly rotates at a faster rate than the surface of the planet.

In a study just published in Science Advances, scientists show beyond doubt that the inner core changed direction over a six-year period, between 1969 and 1974, based on analysis of seismic data. The researchers also claim that their model of movement of the inner core explains the variation in the length of days, which has been changing persistently over the last few decades.
