Almost all EU member states, including Bulgaria, have not transposed into their national legislation an EU regulation regarding the acceleration of procedures for issuing permits for renewable energy projects, the European Commission announced today, as quoted by DPA.

The Commission is launching criminal proceedings by sending formal letters of formal notice to all EU countries, except Denmark – the only EU country to meet the July 1st deadline for implementing the rules.

If Germany and the other countries of the community do not notify the European Commission in time about the implementation of the directive, the EC can extend the procedure.

This can lead to a fine and a case in the Court of Justice of the European Communities (EU).

The new EU rules provide for simplification and acceleration of the procedures for issuing permits, including for projects to include the additionally produced renewable energy in the electricity grid. The rules contain clear deadlines for the procedures and are based on the understanding that renewable energy projects and the corresponding network infrastructure are of primary public interest, writes BTA.

“The fact that Germany still hasn’t implemented the directive is shocking,” said Andrea Wechsler, an MEP from the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in Germany.
