In an immediate reaction to the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-24, the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) said that it is not possible to reduce inflation and prevent the rise in commodity prices with the initiatives announced in this budget.

CPD Executive Director Fahmida Khatun said this on Thursday (June 1) evening. He said, ‘The macroeconomic projections made in the budget are illusory and not achievable. In dealing with the ongoing economic crisis, both recognition and solutions in the announced budget are insufficient.

Fahmida Khatun said, the solutions that have been given to curb the pressure of inflation and the upward movement of products are not possible. It is said to bring down the rate of inflation by 6 percent through them, they will not be possible.

He said that the common people would get relief if tax concessions were given on daily commodities. Not much initiative was noticed there. The tax-free life span has been extended, which is good. But to get 38 government services, tax returns must be submitted. Here tax payer is taxed at Rs 2,000 irrespective of the income of the taxpayer. This seems imprudent to us. I demand to remove the provision of taking 2000 taka minimum tax for everyone regardless of the service.

Noting that the budget does not mention any steps regarding economic reforms, Fahmida Khatun further said, ‘The budget has been prepared at a time when the IMF has different conditions, since they will give loans. The IMF is mentioned three times in the budget document. Nothing was said about the terms of the IMF. There are indications of compliance with these conditions at various targets.’
