The Sunday newspaper (JDD) will not appear on newsstands Sunday for the sixth week in a row, due to the social movement led by its journalists. Saturday 29 July, the editorial staff of JDD renewed its strike, led against the arrival at its head of the journalist marked on the far right Geoffroy Lejeune, at 97% (93 for, 3 against, 7 abstentions), according to a statement of the Society of Journalists (SDJ).

A sign of very strong support from journalists for the social movement after 37 days of strike and despite the breakdown of negotiations with the Lagardère group, owner of the weekly, announced at the beginning of the week. He had confirmed the arrival « effective » August 1 by Geoffroy Lejeune, editor-in-chief of the political weekly. The publication of the newspaper on Sunday was thus already judged « impossible ».

The editorial staff opposes the appointment of Mr. Lejeune, who came from the far-right newspaper Current valuesat its head, “whose values are in total contradiction with those of the JDD »and asks for“provide journalists with guarantees of legal and editorial independence”. She will decide again on the continuation of the movement on Tuesday, the day of the official arrival of Geoffroy Lejeune.

Call to protect editorial independence

On Friday, more than twenty journalists from the weekly gathered near the Ministry of Culture, where a delegation was received by the cabinet of Rima Abdul Malak.

The strikers called on the minister to support recent parliamentary initiatives aimed at protecting the editorial independence of newsrooms, and to ensure that the States General of Information announced for September by the Elysée “don’t be an empty shell”.

Many observers see in the appointment of Geoffroy Lejeune as head of the JDD the result of the hand of the billionaire Vincent Bolloré, whose Vivendi group must soon absorb the Lagardère group, owner of the JDDof Paris Match and Europe 1, after a successful takeover bid.

The previous strikes carried out against his supposed interference with i-Télé in 2016, which has since become CNews and owned by Vivendi, and at Europe 1 in 2021, resulted in the mass departures of journalists from the editorial staff concerned.

The current social movement in JDD is unprecedented in the history of the newspaper: the previous strike, which took place in 2016, had prevented the publication of the weekly for only one Sunday.
