The EESC campaigns for a treaty against plastic pollution

The Economic, Social and Environmental Council advocates the adoption of an international protocol to limit pollution by products derived from hydrocarbons by 2040. A recent international report highlights their toxicity at all stages.

Unanimously, the ESEC (Economic, Social and Environmental Council) adopted a report on Tuesday which contains around twenty proposals to fight against plastic pollution in the world. This opinion comes in response to a resolution voted in March 2022 by the UN: the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has launched international negotiations with a view to developing « a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment », recalls IDDRI (Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations). Of the approximately 20 million tonnes of plastic thrown into the environment each year around the world, half ends up in the oceans. If nothing is done, at the current rate of global production of 460 million tonnes of plastic per year, these volumes in the environment are likely to triple by 2060.
