The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted a green loan of 55 million euros to a joint venture in which Iberdrola (75%) and Caja Rural de Soria (25%) participate for the construction of the Buniel wind farm in Castilla y León .

The project has been announced in a joint statement sent by the three entities this Friday. It will have a total investment of about 100 million euros and will generate up to 200 jobs in the construction phase and about 10 jobs during the exploitation phase.

The Buniel wind farm, located in the province of Burgos, will have a total installed power of about 100 megawatts (MW) and the capacity to supply clean energy to about 69,700 homes. In this sense, it will be one of the most powerful parks in the area.

In addition, the operation contributes to the REPowerEU Plan of the European Commission, which has the objective of promoting the ecological transition, and at the national level to the objectives established in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021-2030.

“We are pleased to finance this wind farm, which is differential in many aspects and will contribute to the climate objectives of Spain and Europe, and will act as an economic and employment engine for a cohesive region such as Castilla y León” assured the Vice President of the EIB, Ricardo Mourinho Felix.

For his part, the CEO of Iberdrola Spain, Mario Ruiz-Tagle, confirmed Spain’s potential in renewable energy and that with these initiatives “we are helping to make our country a benchmark in the sector.”

The president of Caja Rural de Soria, Carlos Martínez Izquierdo, who is also the head of the company that promotes the wind farm, has highlighted the importance of having a presence in the economy “attached to the territory”.

“Investing in ‘energy freedom’ makes us more economically stable as a country, something much more evident in this very adverse geopolitical situation that has made the need for clean and local energy a necessity to attend to immediately,” added Martínez.
