The High National Elections Commission issued a statement regarding the start of implementing the “voter card” distribution phase, and announcing the opening of accepting applications for candidacy for the municipal council elections (first group/2024).

The Commission said in the statement: “In implementation of Law No. (20) of 2023 and its Executive Regulations No. (43) of 2023 regarding municipal council elections, and the completion of the two stages of voter registration and objections and judicial appeals, which were completed according to their timetable, the electoral process for municipal council elections has approached its end by entering the two stages of distributing (voter cards) and announcing the start of accepting candidacy applications on Sunday, August 18, 2024.”

The statement added: “We call on voters whose names and data have been included in the final voter registry to go to the polling stations where they registered (accompanied by a proof of identity document) to receive their electoral cards, noting that the card issued for the municipal council elections is a completely new card and has no relation to the card issued for the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2021.”

The statement continued: “We also call upon citizens wishing to run for the targeted municipal council elections to review the candidacy guide issued by the Commission, understand the electoral mechanisms and systems included in the executive regulations, and verify the validity of the documents submitted to the candidacy application acceptance committees in our branches and offices within the scope of which the municipal councils targeted by the electoral process are located.”

The Commission indicated that it “will cooperate with the relevant state institutions regarding some of the required documents to verify the accuracy of the information contained therein, and will not hesitate to exclude any application that does not meet the conditions stipulated in accordance with the articles contained in Chapter Five of the Executive Regulations.”

At the end of her statement, she said: “On this occasion, we salute everyone who contributed to the success of the voter registration and electoral appeals stages, and we highly appreciate the efforts and endeavors made by everyone without exception in order to make these elections a success, to motivate citizens and push them to participate in deciding who will manage the affairs of their municipalities and raise their living and development demands to the planning and decision-making departments in a way that achieves positive rates of local development levels, and strengthens the foundations of local governance, and we ask God Almighty for success and guidance for all.”
