The High National Elections Commission issued a statement on the latest developments in the stage of accepting applications for candidacy for the municipal council elections (first group)..

The statement said: “The noble goal behind implementing any electoral process is to establish the principle of peaceful transfer of power and enhance the participation of all members of society in decision-making by electing those who represent them before the various authorities. Such practices are likely to enhance the spirit of citizenship and belonging by placing the responsibility on the citizen to take an important part of that decision, which is to choose the candidates who will undertake to demand his service rights in various fields and within the scope of the municipality where he resides.”

The statement added: “Through the Commission’s Board’s follow-up of the progress of the stage of submitting candidacy applications in accordance with the electoral systems stipulated in the Executive Regulations for the Election of Municipal Councils No. (43) of 2023, it was noted that some (municipal councils targeted by the electoral process) lacked the principle of (justice and equal opportunities) by prior control over the formation of lists and deciding who has the right to run in ways that go beyond the spirit of the electoral process, and entrench the principle of exclusion and confiscation of voters’ votes and the rights of candidates.”

The statement continued: “While the Commission Council warns that such practices do not establish credible elected municipal councils that effectively express the choices of their voters regarding those who represent them before the officials and institutions of the executive authority, the matter may force us to take decisive decisions that would protect the rights of everyone who took the initiative to participate positively in the electoral process, and to eliminate all practices that would distort the course of the electoral process, the essence of which is the voter’s voice and the right to run for office.”

The statement added: “The Commission Council also warns against attempts to undermine the electoral process in some electoral councils targeted by the electoral process by imposing a fait accompli based on the control of influential groups through the formation of electoral lists using unfair methods that indicate fraud and falsification of the rules and reality of the electoral process, and that they will not be allowed to decide the course of the electoral process away from what is stipulated in the executive regulations and what they include in terms of principles and standards that preserve the goal of the peaceful transfer of power, and the Council will not hesitate to take immediate decisions that would preserve the votes of voters and guarantee the rights of candidates, and nullify attempts to attack the integrity of the electoral process.”
