Antony Gautier*, director of arbitration, and Stéphane Lannoy**, deputy director in charge of the professional sector, examined these 11 ideas.

Inspired by rugby, basketball, handball, ice hockey and even tennis, Le Figaro devised eleven rule changes to improve football and submitted them to two former international referees.

1. Allow only one player per team to communicate with the referee

Stephane Lannoy:“It’s one of the novelties of the season. We asked the clubs that the captain be the privileged interlocutor to demand explanations from the referee. If the captain is the goalkeeper, there will be a relay player, in the field. We want to break the image of a referee surrounded by four or five players who systematically come to put pressure on him, either to force a warning or to request the use of VAR. The idea is that the coaches, players and other actors on the ground accompany us in this desire.»
