The chief negotiator maintained that the plea of the Northern Front of the ELN not to release Luis Manuel Díaz, the athlete’s father, ended with the departure on Monday of the troops from the area in the Serranía del Perijá, on the border with Venezuela, where he believes he would be detained.

“The last pretext they had for not releasing him was the militarization of the area and now he no longer has any pretext,” argued the chief negotiator, who assured that at this moment the dialogue with the ELN only revolves around that release.

Regarding the announcement by the Ómar Gómez front of the ELN that decreed a 72-hour armed strike in Bajo Baudó, Choco, Patiño said that “the confinement is an element that violates the ceasefire,” but reiterated that “at this moment we are focused on the release of Mr. Díaz.”

The father of the English Liverpool and Colombia national team footballer was kidnapped on October 28 in the municipality of Barrancas, department of La Guajira, along with his wife Cilenis Marulanda, who was released shortly after.

The Army and the Police deployed an operation with more than 200 men to pressure the release of the player’s father and in the middle of last week it was learned that he was in the power of the ELN, which hid behind economic arguments to justify the kidnapping, while Antonio García , one of his top bosses considered the event a “mistake.”

However, García maintained that the kidnapping was not within the framework of the ceasefire agreements, which are currently active, while Otty Patiño maintained that it is a continuous crime and violates international humanitarian law.

Due to situations such as the kidnapping of the father of soccer player Luis Díaz at the hands of the ELN or the decision of the dissidents of the Central General Staff to suspend the negotiation table with the Government, this Tuesday the Ombudsman’s Office urged the armed groups to ” get serious” with the peace processes.

According to the organization, both the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the FARC dissidents of the Central General Staff (EMC) must understand “once and for all” that peace is not negotiated with “parallel speeches to give them rein in their actions.”

“While in the formal conversations they talk about advancing in the search for paths to peace, in the territories they continue to affect the communities. The illegal armed groups have to get serious about the peace process, it is the feeling that we gather from all the communities, whose rights have been violated due to the actions of the violent in the territories,” declared the Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo.
