A study, the first of its kind conducted by the Danish University of Aarhus, sought to identify lost working years associated with mental disorders, by looking at the data of 5 million people, between the ages of 18 and 65.

The study found that those with mental disorders lose an average of 10 years off their career, among other consequences for their working lives.

The researchers showed that “people with a high degree of mental disorders may be unable to work or study.

The study added that those diagnosed with schizophrenia lose, on average, 24 years of working life after diagnosis.

The study concluded that it is necessary to invest in programs that reduce the number of lost work years and help people with mental disorders to continue working, taking into account their circumstances.
