For the fifteenth consecutive year, the Empresa y Clima Private Foundation will participate and accompany Spanish and international companies and entities during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) which will be held in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) between November 30 and December 12.

The Empresa & Clima Foundation will attend this world forum once again as a United Nations Observer, a qualification it obtained in 2010. This is a restricted category that allows it to attend all common negotiation areas and participate in parallel social forums. and businesses that are generated.

This nature of observer accredited by the United Nations is what allows him to accompany 17 companies and entities in this edition so that they know first-hand the progress of the negotiation and can participate in those forums corresponding to their activity and sector.

On this occasion, the 17 companies and entities that the Empresa & Clima Foundation will accompany during COP28 are: Global Omnium, Air Products, Acciona, Baleària, Cementos Molins, Celsa Group, STX Group, Naturgy, We Are Water Foundation (Roca Group), Carburos Metálicos, Fluidra, Nortegas, Aenor, Tennders Europe, Normmal, Vilaseca Consultors and Minka-Dev.

Elvira Carles, Director of the Empresa & Clima Private Foundation points out that “One more year we will once again be the largest Spanish business delegation and one of the most powerful in southern Europe. This allows us to have representatives in practically all rooms and plenary sessions.“.

In addition, the Empresa & Clima Foundation, like last year, will organize two Side Events, one during the first week, on Wednesday the 6th, and the other the second, on Saturday the 9th. In both, participating companies will be able to explain what they are doing. to decarbonize and what issues they are working on

What to expect from COP28

Regarding what is expected from COP28, Elvira Carles points out that “in Dubai, we must definitively close Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, on how international carbon markets should function and be financed”.

Other relevant topics are that “The type of coordination that must exist between the national registries and the only international emissions registry will foreseeably be specified.” existing after the COP27 agreements. Also “It would be important to determine where the financial resources promised for the Loss and Damage Fund, approved in Egypt last year during the last COP, will come from.”, points out the director of the Empresa & Clima Foundation.

Following the continental rotation, “COP28 will take place in the United Arab Emirates, which may cause special sensitivity towards fossil fuels”says the expert who has participated in 15 summits. This claim “It is not a new aspect and is repeated in each COP, where organizers sometimes legitimately demand measures or reparations, often economic, in favor of their climate interests.”.

Finally, and also very important, they are two elements that go beyond the strictly technical “We will witness to what extent the recent conflict in the Middle East influences the negotiations” and highlight the change of people in some key negotiating positions, “It remains to be seen whether the new EU head of climate change policies, the Dutchman Wopke Hoekstra, maintains the level of ambition of his predecessor Frans Timmermans.”.
