Sunday 8 October on newsstands and in the App with number #619 also the special insert aimed at very young people, parents, educators… Digital extra: a portrait of the master of science fiction Sheckley

A special weekend with two «Readings»: two supplements will be released on newsstands and on the App on Sunday 8 October, namely the new issue of «la Lettura», #619, with 64 pages of previews, interviews and stories and with the cover by a master of pencil and animation, Bruno Bozzetto; and also «the Reading of girls and boys», a special issue that greets the start of school, with the cover by the author and designer Sualzo.

The issue of «la Lettura» #619 opens with a cult writer, Bret Easton Ellis, who in his novels represented the disorientation of yuppie and narcissistic America in the Eighties and Nineties, and who will be in Italy (in Florence on the 18th, Turin on 21 October) to present the new novel, Le sphegge (Einaudi), about a group of rich and bored kids in the 1980s. A double opening, because it combines Alessandro Piperno’s reflection on the new book by the American author, and an exchange with Ellis by Vanni Santoni: the writer’s memories of his adolescence emerge, his gaze on the privileged generation of the book, the reflection on maturity (“Everything is more difficult when you’re older, isn’t it?”), and the criticism of politically correct censorship, which Bret Easton Ellis never liked.

Another literary voice in the issue is Zadie Smith, who will be in Milan on Tuesday 17 October to receive the city seal from mayor Giuseppe Sala and present the new book The Impostor, published by Mondadori (also in Rome on 18 October): in the interview by Luigi Ippolito, the author who has always written about contemporary England explains why she tried her hand at a historical novel for the first time, competing with the great fathers of English fiction, such as Charles Dickens, to tell a plot set in the Victorian age and a famous trial of the time, about a butcher who claimed the title of baronet.

There is the story of an entire existence, and of a career marked by restlessness, in the great Parisian exhibition that the Fondation Vuitton dedicates to Mark Rothko and which opens on 19 October: in Stefano Bucci’s article, the story of a artistic path marked by the transition from “classical” surrealism to abstract language, evident in the Parisian exhibition which traces the artist’s production with 115 works.

The Theme of the Day, extra digital only in the «la Lettura» App, is Sunday 8 October by Pierdomenico Baccalario: it is the portrait of a great master of science fiction Robert Sheckley (1928-2005), an author of satirical science fiction still little known in Italy; in the special insert «the Reading of girls and boys», available in the App and on newsstands with «la Lettura» and «Corriere», a section is dedicated to the great masters of various literary genres. Among the Themes available in the App also the one on the painters who painted architecture signed by Pierluigi Panza. In the issue, an article by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle is dedicated to Gabriele Basilico, architectural photographer, at the center of a double exhibition in Milan ten years after his death.

In addition to the Topic of the Day and the most recent issue of the supplement previewed on Saturdays, the «la Lettura» App for smartphones and tablets also offers the archive of all the issues released since 2011. Subscribing to the App costs 3, 99 euros per month or 39.99 per year, with one week free. The subscription can also be subscribed from desktop starting from this page. For subscribers, the contents are also visible from PC and Mac from their Profile page.

After all, novel genres are like mountain routes: you climb the peak of adventure and meet Jack London and Sergio Bonelli, you climb the mountain of the fantastic and you find JK Rowling and Rick Riordan. They are Le vie dei giganti, the large two-page drawing that opens the «Letturina», by Andrea Tullio Canobbio, Pierdomenico Baccalario, Marco Magnone and Gud. Also to be removed and preserved is Carlotta Cubeddu’s centerfold, the Somario (with a single m) dedicated to famous “donkeys”, characters who didn’t shine at school and then became Alan Turing, Stan Lee or Daniel Pennac.
