The entry into service in Italy of the first train powered by liquefied gas is authorized

The General Directorate of the Italian National Agency for the Safety of Railway, Road and Highway Infrastructures has authorized, for the first time in Italy, the operation of a railway vehicle, called ALn 668 and powered by liquefied natural gas.

(19/05/2023)

The train has obtained the necessary authorization for all the infrastructure managed by the Italian rail network and, for the moment, will operate tourist services on the Sulmona-Carpinone section. The introduction of the train powered by liquefied natural gas is a step in the transition towards greener energy sources in the rail sector.

Liquefied natural gas can help reduce emissions and improve the energy efficiency of trains, thus reducing environmental impact and promoting cleaner mobility in the country. The Italian Railways Foundation, FS Italiane, is experimenting with liquid methane for historic trains, replacing the old and polluting thermal traction locomotives.(See news).
