As the monthly salary of soldiers increases to 1.25 million won for sergeants this year and enters the ‘2 million won era’ next year, it was revealed that soldiers are spending the most on savings such as tomorrow’s preparation savings.
The Defense Public Relations Agency’s Defense Daily announced on the 29th that it conducted a barracks chart survey on ‘where the salary is spent the most’ and ‘monthly average amount spent’ targeting 855 soldiers from the 12th to the 18th.
According to the results of the survey, more than half of the respondents, 60.9% (521 people), answered that they spend most of their salary on savings.
The most common reason was ‘saving money (for the future)’ at 66% (344 people). Other reasons included ‘I like the benefits of the Soldiers Tomorrow Preparation Savings System’ (11.7%), ‘I don’t have a place to spend it’ (7.1%), ‘saving living expenses and tuition’ (5.8%), and ‘saving travel funds’ (2.3%).
Private Kim of the 12th Division of the Army said, “I use most of my salary for savings,” and added, “Since I was a private, I have been putting 400,000 won into the Soldiers’ Tomorrow Preparation Savings Account every month, and now that I am a private, I have a little more money, so I am saving 100,000 won more every month.”
The most common response, at 62.8% (327 people), was ‘400,000 won or more but less than 700,000 won’ when asked about the average amount spent on monthly savings.
Next, it was recorded in the order of ‘700,000 won or more but less than 1 million won’ (16.1%), and ‘100,000 won or more but less than 400,000 won’ (12.5%). Among the sergeant ranks, which have relatively high salaries, there was also a response of ‘1 million won or more’ (2.1%).
As a result, the percentage of respondents whose savings amount was ‘more than 400,000 won per month’ was 81%. The amount of 400,000 won seems to be related to the fact that the maximum monthly payment amount per person in the Soldiers Tomorrow Savings System is 400,000 won.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, the average monthly subscription rate for active-duty soldiers over the past 12 months was 98.4%. The average payment amount in June was 395,000 won.
If you pay 400,000 won per month into the Soldiers Tomorrow Savings during your 18-month service period in the Army, you can save up to 14 million won when you are discharged, including the principal, interest, and government financial support. Starting next year, the monthly payment limit will be increased to 550,000 won, which will increase the benefits for soldiers.
The most common use of soldiers’ remaining salaries after saving was found to be ‘using the military mart (PX)’ (10.8%). The 3rd to 8th most common uses of soldiers’ salaries were ‘travel expenses’, ‘culture and hobbies’, ‘financial management’, ‘self-development’, ‘family allowance including parents’, and ‘gift purchases’.
