In ‘Mujer contra mujer’ they signed one of the first homosexual-themed songs and one of the most emblematic about liberation. In ‘Bailando salsa’ they gave the genre a spin. While ‘Hijo de la luna’, which was a success in France like so many other songs by Mecano, is understood as a great zarzuela. The musical richness and the different corners of his lyrics, from the naive to the social, beat in ‘Cruz de Navajas, the last Mecano’, a show that plays with the codes of the musical, the cinema and live performance to recover the repertoire of one of the great Spanish pop bands.

From July 26 to 30, the Teatro Principal in Vitoria is set as the residence of this production directed by Gonzalo Pérez Pastor, who has worked on productions such as ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘Avenue Q’, ‘Today I can’t get up’ or ‘ Smiles and tears’. There will be six shows in total, one per day and a double on Saturday, July 29. “It is not a musical or a concert or a contemporary dance show or an audiovisual show, but much more than that”, Pérez points out about the show that has constant changes of scenery, nine dancers and five musicians to accompany the 35 songs. from the band. In this large technical staff there are more than 20 light and sound professionals. “We make each Mecano song a musical in itself,” says the producer and director.

Lieta Molinet, vocal director and singer; Lucía Bentabol, singer; and Asier León, singer and dancer. Molinet, who has been in charge of the musical arrangements and ensures that “the essence of Mecano is maintained”. The creative and adaptation process lasted more than a month and a half. From their work at home with the piano and the scores to going through the rehearsals, they recognize that they have experienced the process as something “exciting”. “They are stories with which we become owners so that the public can feel it.”

Sonia Díaz de Corcuera, Councilor for Culture, also participated in the event at the Vitoria theater in what was her first press conference in office. “Culture is the best, it is progress, progress and an essential part of any city and society,” she claimed in her speech. About the assembly, she emphasized the weight of the mythical band -which broke up more than 30 years ago- to mark “an entire generation” and that its repertoire continues to interest the youngest.

The presentation of the different performances served Pérez to join in his own way the denunciation of some cultural professionals from all over Spain in a statement of the “return of censorship”. “Culture is the support of ideas and what separates us from the animals,” he commented in a statement about the importance of creation “in these times that haunt us.”
