The sentence of the 28-year-old woman from Ethiopia, who was arrested in February 2021 for the death of her six-month-old baby in Ioannina, was reduced from 15 to six years in prison by the Mixed Court of Appeal of Ioannina.

The woman had been sentenced in the first degree by the Joint Assize Court of Arta to 15 years in prison for manslaughter, however in the second degree the charge was changed to fatal bodily harm, with the court accepting the claims of the 28-year-old today, who from the beginning had maintained that she had not hit her baby, but had shaken it to stop it from crying.

The unfortunate boy had been transported by EKAB ambulance, unconscious, to the “Hatzikosta” Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at midnight on February 10, 2021. According to the forensic report, the infant had injuries to the head, chest and in the abdomen. The then 25-year-old woman lived in a house rented by an NGO in Ioannina, with another foreigner, originally from Cameroon.

In addition to changing the charge from premeditated homicide to grievous bodily harm, the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Ioannina recognized the 28-year-old as a mitigating factor in her honorable individual, family, professional and generally social life.
