BRUSSELS, July 20. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –

The European Union has decided this Thursday to extend for another six months all the economic sanctions against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, measures that represent a commercial disconnection with the country and, in the case of sectors such as energy, a shift in European policy.

Since February 2022, the EU has applied the largest sanctions package in its history against Moscow, which includes restrictions on trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transport and luxury items.

After approving eleven rounds of sanctions, the Twenty-seven have also applied a ban on the import and transfer of crude oil transported by sea and certain oil products from Russia, in addition to sanctions on Russian banks, suspension of the SWIFT transfer method and the activities in Europe of media outlets affiliated with the Kremlin.

With this measure, the sanctions will remain in place until at least January 31, 2024. This is only part of the range of sanctions imposed on Russia for its belligerence against Ukraine, a series of measures that it began to apply in 2014 with the Russian annexation of Crimea.

In addition, the bloc maintains restrictions on economic relations with Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as non-government controlled areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts, and individual restrictions against nearly 2,000 Russian individuals and entities implicated in violating Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
