The European Union is ready to do without imports of Russian natural gas transported via pipelines through Ukraine after the current transit agreement expires at the end of the year. This was stated today in Brussels by the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.
On December 31, the contract for the transit of Russian natural gas through the territory of Ukraine expires. His transportation continued against the background of the Russian military invasion. Some EU countries still continue to buy blue fuel from Russia, DPA points out.
Russian supplies currently make up 18 percent of the total amount of natural gas imported into the European Union. In 2021, they accounted for 45 percent of blue fuel imports, noted the European energy commissioner.
For months, the EU has been preparing to end transit imports of Russian natural gas through Ukraine. Alternative supplies of blue fuel have already been secured, Kadri Simson pointed out. She added that “it is no longer necessary (…) to continue trading with Gazprom”, reports BTA.
The European commissioner pointed out that the EU is helping a number of gas companies that have long-term contracts with the Russian state company for the supply of blue fuel to find other suppliers.
