The European Union intends, following the United States, to “reconsider the risks” of using Chinese microcircuits in key areas of the economy. According to a draft working statement seen by Bloomberg, Brussels is considering the possibility of conducting an investigation into the use of semiconductors in industry networks, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

Such a measure, according to the agency, “will reflect the US administration’s initiative to assess the risks associated with the use of chips,” which are vital to the military and industries ranging from electric vehicles to infrastructure. Such a review could be the first step towards “joint measures with the United States,” including various restrictions.

Washington is concerned that growing Chinese investment in this area will help Chinese companies dominate the supply of semiconductors in the same way as they do in the renewable energy and steel industries, the publication says. As noted in the draft statement, the potential assessment is one of several items on the agenda of the EU-US Council Trade and Technology Conference scheduled for April in Belgium.

On October 17, 2023, the US Department of Commerce announced the blacklisting of 13 Chinese companies and the expansion of export restrictions on the sale of semiconductors to China. These businesses are said to be “acting contrary to the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States.” In October 2022, the US announced several restrictions on the export of advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China.
