The European Commission has paid Italy the fifth installment of its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRSP) after COVID-19, worth 11 billion euros, the European executive said today, as quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA.

The fifth payment request relates to 53 milestones and targets related to the NPV, a massive program that aims to make the Italian economy greener and more modern with the help of around 194 billion euros in grants and low-interest loans from the EU.

This includes key targets for the implementation of 14 reforms and 22 investments in sectors including competition, public procurement, waste and water management, the judiciary, education and public spending.

The Commission gave a positive assessment on 2 July to the Italian request for the payment of the fifth installment.

The disbursement of the funds depends on the achievement of the objectives related to the reforms and projects.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said today that the country “is in first place” in the European Union in terms of “the number of goals achieved and the total amounts received”.

“We were the first to ask for the NPVU contribution and the first to ask for the sixth installment under the plan. The latest GDP statistics, which estimated growth in the first quarter of 2024 of 0.7%, as well as the latest report of the Association for the Development of Industry in Southern Italy, which in 2023 highlighted the acceleration of GDP growth in the south of the country, with a 2.6% growth in new jobs, demonstrate the effective work carried out by the government and the administrations charged with achieving the planned objectives and implementing the measures for the structural growth of the Italian economy,” Meloni said after the payment of the fifth installment of NPVU, reports BTA.
