BOLZANO. The third edition of the International Conference on the Protection of Human Rights was held today (7 September) in Bressanone. Day of the Euregio Municipalities. Representatives from Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino met at the Brixen Forum to further strengthen cross-border cooperation between municipalities.

This year’s event focused on digitalization and on theartificial intelligence which offer great opportunities to increase their efficiency and improve services to citizens.

The event was attended by the current President of the Euregio and President of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano Arno Kompatscher, his counterpart from the Province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti and the Vice President of Tyrol Georg Dornauer.

Kompatscher he expressed his satisfaction, “that the municipalities of the Euregio are engaging in cross-border discussions and are developing joint strategies for digitalisation and artificial intelligence. We need to be careful about this, because AI offers many solutions, but it is also a technology with cold logic. Therefore, people must necessarily maintain constant control over AI. This also applies, and above all, to municipalities that are looking for solutions for their citizens at the local level.”

“I believe it is important to put citizens at the centre of the debate on artificial intelligence, because our Municipalities are the first bodies that know the needs and expectations of the population: it is a crucial challenge, which has to do with the future of our territories”, commented the Trentino governor Fugatti.

The professor Mark Montali of the Faculty of Engineering of the Free University of Bolzano spoke about the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in public administration. In a round table discussion, experts from the three regions then discussed developments in the field of digitalization and artificial intelligence and their possible applications in municipalities. The event was also an opportunity to share experiences and create knowledge networks. “Digitalization and artificial intelligence are topics that pose equal challenges for the municipalities of the three regions. It is therefore appropriate to develop joint strategies and learn from each other”, he says. Andreas SchatzerPresident of the Consortium of Municipalities of the Province of Bolzano. “The municipalities of South Tyrol are already making good progress in the field of digitalization. As far as artificial intelligence is concerned, however, we are still at the beginning”, said Schatzer.

The Day of the Euregio Municipalities was also an opportunity to take stock of the necessary Reconstruction of the Europa Refuge in Val di Vizzewhere the border between Austria and Italy passes right through the middle of the refuge. Peter Trenkwalder, President of the Rifugio Europa Foundation, illustrated the project in the presence of six mayors Stefan Gufler (Val di Vizze) and Karl Mühlsteiger (Gries am Brenner). The Rifugio Europa is an example of cross-border cooperation between two municipalities in Tyrol and South Tyrol and is owned by the Landshut section of the DAV (German Alpine Club) and the Province of Bolzano.
