There are many cities in Europe that are worth visiting. However, many of them are packed with tourists. In some cases, there are more than 10 visitors for every inhabitant.

The Holidu portal has compiled the ranking of the busiest cities in Europe in terms of tourists per capita. And among the first 10 there is no Spanish. Dubrovnik (Croatia) leads the ranking, followed by Venice, Bruges, the island of Rhodes and Reikjavik. FFlorence, Amsterdam or Dublin are some of the names that complete the ‘top 10’.

Dubrovnik (Croatia) – 36 tourists per inhabitant

Dubrovnik is the city with the most tourists in Europe. It is known for its splendid orange roofs and for its presence in the acclaimed Game of Thrones. With a relatively small population, Dubrovnik receives an influx of tourists during the summer months, especially July and August. The best advice is to visit in early May or mid-September to mid-October to avoid the crowds. In September, although there are far fewer tourists, there are still some events that attract visitors from all over the world.

Venice (Italy) – 21 tourists per inhabitant

In second place is Venice, with its narrow streets and narrow bridges. This city has a complicated history with over-tourism. The infrastructures have been put to the test on many occasions by tourists, especially daytime ones, who usually descend from cruise ships that stop for a few hours and do not represent any real economic benefit for the city. Venice even banned cruise ships in its historic center in August 2021 and there is talk of the possibility of introducing an entrance ticket to the city. The best time to visit is from September to November and the advice is to stay for two to three nights.

Bruges (Belgium) – 21 tourists per inhabitant

In third place is Bruges and its wonderful medieval architecture. Bruges is a small city with a big reputation: it has 21 tourists per capita and draws a crowd, especially from late May through most of the summer. Tourists flock to admire its architecture and picturesque canals. Also, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a must-see city. Of course, we advise you to go in spring and autumn to avoid the crowds, since it is still quite hot but you will not have to wait in long lines (beginning of May or September).

Rhodes (Greece) – 21 tourists per inhabitant

The next stop is Rhodes, Greece, the largest of the Dodecanese islands! Rhodes is known for its ancient ruins and spas, so it’s easy to see why it has 21 tourists per capita. With its medieval streets and buildings, Rhodes offers history and wonderful beaches in one place. We highly recommend visiting between April and May to avoid the high tourist season, crowds and high prices.

Reykjavik (Iceland) – 16 tourists per inhabitant

With 16 tourists per inhabitant, Reikjavik ranks fifth in the ranking. Known for its nature and picturesque landscapes, Iceland boasts impressive waterfalls, blue lagoons, extraordinary glaciers, and active volcanoes. Reikjavik is known for its vibrant nightlife and music festivals. Peak season for Iceland is during the summer months between June and August. This is when the weather is milder and the daylight is greater. May and September are the ideal months for those looking for a quieter vacation, since there are much fewer people during these periods.
