by time news

The European Commission today launches the Cancer Knowledge Center, set up as part of the European Cancer Plan. The knowledge center is a new online platform that will be used to collect data and coordinate actions against the leading cause of death under 65 in Europe. The center will collect the latest numbers on cancer cases, provide guidance on health care and quality assurance systems, monitor and develop trends in cancer incidence and mortality across the EU. It is also a space where all those engaged in the fight against cancer can share best practices, collaborate and coordinate to make the most of collective knowledge and proven scientific data.

The instruments

The platform hosts a reference point for policy-making on prevention, through the information desk for health promotion and disease prevention, the European Cancer Information System, European guidelines and health assurance systems. quality for cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment. The plan to fight cancer defines a new and ambitious approach to reduce the burden of cancer in the EU, addressing the disease in all its stages, from prevention to the quality of life of those affected and those who defeated it – and focusing on actions to which the EU can bring the greatest added value. In addition, the future cancer mission under Horizon Europe will be a key component of EU investment in cancer research and innovation, supporting several key actions of the Cancer Plan and providing new concepts to develop innovative strategic solutions for the benefit of patients.

The initial contribution

A first key result of the knowledge center was also launched: the European guidelines and the quality assurance program for breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment. These patient-centered and data-driven guidelines provide health care providers and women with clear and independent guidance for a comprehensive health care pathway for the most common type of cancer in the female population. They will help reduce the incidence of breast cancer and address avoidable inequalities in incidence, prevalence, mortality and survival rates between and within EU countries. The guidelines and accompanying quality assurance manuals are available online on the knowledge center page and will be updated as new data becomes available. The Cancer Knowledge Center will be the Commission’s 10th knowledge center and the 9th to be launched under the leadership of the Joint Research Center; it adds to those already established in the fields of biodiversity, bioeconomy, Earth observation, global food and nutrition security, territorial policies, migration and demographics, disaster risk management, food fraud and food quality and interpretation.
