Europe is considered one of the freest continents in the world. Most of the European countries rank high in the Human Freedom Index (Human Freedom Index), occupying 19 of the top 25 positions in the ranking, according to the report prepared by the Cato Institute of the USA and the Fraser Institute from Canada.

Switzerland (8.94) is the country with the highest score in Europe and the world. Behind, Estonia (8.73) is the second most ‘free’ country in Europe and the third in the world, only surpassed by New Zealand. Spain is among the countries above eight points out of 10, and ranked 31st in the world.

Most of Europe seems to be doing well in terms of freedom, scoring above 7.50 on average. The countries with the best score in Europe are Turkey (5.71), which has the lowest score in Europe, followed closely by Belarus (5.78) and Russia (6.01).

This eighth annual index uses 83 different indicators of personal and economic freedom in areas as diverse as the rule of law, security, movement of people, freedom of religion, association, assembly and civil society, as well as freedom of expression and information or the legal system and property rights, a strong currency, freedom of international trade and country regulations.
