In January 2024, the Czech Republic sharply increased purchases of Russian gas. The local publication Novinky reported this with reference to data from the gas operator of the European country NET4GAS, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

Supplies to the European country began to increase in January 2024, fuel is imported through the territory of Slovakia. Now the share of Russian gas is 62 percent. From January to October 2023, it accounted for only two percent of imported energy resources.

At the same time, in 2023, the Czech authorities announced “overcoming dependence on Russian gas.” Local authorities claimed that the country now receives most of its fuel from Norway. The decision to refuse supplies from the Russian Federation was the first in the country’s history; before that, it purchased 97 percent of its gas from Russia.

According to the publication Ekonomický deník, by reducing Russian gas supplies, the Czech Republic simultaneously increased oil supplies. Since the beginning of 2023, the volume of imported raw materials has increased from 56 to 65 percent.
