The European Parliament (EP) wants to legally challenge the payment by the European Commission (EC) to Hungary of €10.2 billion through the European fund intended for the development of depressed areas of the European Union. Previously, they were blocked due to Brussels’ demands on the rule of law and the fight against corruption. As Day.Az reports, the Politico newspaper reported this.

The decision to sue the EU executive “for misuse of taxpayer funds” was made, according to the publication, following a secret vote at a closed-door meeting of the EP Legal Affairs Committee. 16 votes were cast for, 1 – against.

“We believe that we have strong arguments because the EC contradicted itself on the question of whether Hungary respects the rule of law,” Politico quotes EP MP Daniel Freund as saying.

The issue will also be discussed by the leaders of the European Parliament’s political groups at a meeting on Thursday to finally give EP President Roberta Metsola the green light to file legal action against the EC before the March 25 deadline, the publication said.
