The European puzzle of the Copa del Rey: this is how the winner affects the European positions via the League

by time news

LaLiga maintains a clear classification range for the three UEFA competitions: Champions, Europa League and Conference. The top four finishers at the end of the season get a pass to the biggest competition, the Champions League. The fifth automatically qualifies for the Europa League, and the sixth, for the Conference League.

Now, the Copa del Rey champion, since the 1998/99 season, automatically qualifies for the former UEFA Cup and current UEFA Europa League. Therefore, what happens if Real Sociedad, Mallorca, Atlético de Madrid or Athletic Club manage to win the title?

If the team that wins the cup title occupies a place in the Champions League, or Europa League, the assignments in the classifications are moved one position. That is, the sixth classified team would be a Europa League team, and the seventh would become a Conference team, giving Spanish football one more representative in European competition.

If the Cup-winning entity occupies the Conference position at the end of the season, it qualifies for the Europa League and then the seventh team would occupy that Conference League place that corresponded to the sixth team. A case the same as if the winner of the Cup is a Champions or Europa League team.

Now, if the cup winner is a team from outside the seven best classified teams in LaLiga at the end of the season, their qualification to the Europa League is automatic. It would not depend on the classification when the course ends.
