The European Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought awarded to Mahsa Amini and the “Woman Life Freedom” movement

More than a year after her death, the memory of Mahsa Amini remains very vivid. The young woman was posthumously awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded by the European Parliament. The “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, whose demonstrations are bloodily repressed in Iran, also receives this prize.

“The brutal murder of Jina Mahsa Amini”, on September 16, 2022, three days after her arrest by the police for an ill-fitting veil, “marked a turning point”, declared the President of Parliament, Roberta Metsola. “It sparked a women-led movement that made history. The slogan “Woman Lives Freedom” has become a rallying cry for all those who stand for equality, dignity and freedom in Iran.”
