The European Union welcomes the appointment of the new central governor

The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, welcomed the appointment of the Central Bank Governor and his deputy, considering it “a major achievement resulting from the settlement facilitated by the United Nations mission between the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State.”

Orlando said, in a post on his account on the “X” platform: “Restoring the governance, independence, and accountability of the Central Bank are urgent priorities.”

He stressed, “Choosing qualified technocratic leaders to serve as members of the Board of Directors is necessary to rebuild confidence in the institution and protect economic and financial stability in Libya.”

Orlando expressed his optimism that this pivotal agreement will open the door to further progress towards transparent and accountable management of Libya’s wealth and revenues, ensuring that the benefits reach citizens throughout the country.

Orlando urged, “all parties concerned to ensure the immediate resumption of oil and gas production, which is essential to promote development, growth and shared prosperity for all Libyans.”

He stressed, “The European Union mission stands ready to support this Libyan effort, facilitated by the United Nations, and through the Union’s role as co-chair of the Economic Working Group of the Berlin Process, within the framework of supporting Libya towards unity, stability and prosperity in the long term.”
