According to the DGT, during the month of April 38.9 million long-distance journeys were made, compared to 37.6 million in April 2022, which represents an increase of 3.6%.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has acknowledged its concern about the increase in deaths in accidents in a context of greater mobility.

Of the 107 fatalities, more than half have been due to leaving the road, a type of accident in which only the accident vehicle has been involved. Specifically, 59 people died in this type of accident (43 of them on conventional roads and 16 on high-capacity roads) compared to the 37 registered in April last year. This increase in fatalities due to exiting the road has been among motorcyclists and tourism users.

However, deaths from collisions have decreased –30 fatalities, compared to the 47 registered in April of last year– and pedestrian collisions –5, compared to April 12, 2022–.

Conventional highways continue to be the roads where the highest number of fatal accidents are recorded -almost 8 out of 10 deaths-. And, if the means of travel is taken into account, this month the number of motorcyclists killed has increased by seven and the number of bicycle users by four compared to the same month in 2022. Likewise, 23 of the 30 motorcyclists who died were in accidents that had place on conventional roads.

Regarding the use of safety systems, 13 of the deceased were not using the corresponding safety system at the time of the accident: 11 car drivers, 1 van driver and 1 truck driver were not wearing a seat belt.

By autonomous communities, Murcia and the Valencian Community have been the communities that have experienced the greatest increase in accidents, with six more deaths than in April 2022, while Castilla y León has been the region that has reduced its most accident rate with eight fewer deaths, along with Catalonia where they fell by six. Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country and Ceuta and Melilla have not experienced any variation.

The day with the most fatalities was Monday, April 17, with 8 fatalities in which 9 people died. On the contrary, there were only 2 days with 0 deaths: Wednesdays, April 12 and 26.

Speeding on conventional roads

In addition to this balance, last April, between the 17th and 23rd, the General Directorate of Traffic carried out a surveillance and control campaign focused on speed, during which the agents of the Traffic Group of the Guard Civil established 2,838 speed control points in which a total of 792,338 vehicles were controlled.

Of the total number of controlled vehicles, 45,220 drivers (5.7%) were reported for driving at a speed higher than the permitted speed, one tenth more than in the previous campaign of July 2022. If we take into account the type of road, something More than 57% of those denounced (25,903 drivers) were driving on conventional roads, 17,621 on highways or dual carriageways and 1,696 on crossroads.

In the criminal sphere, 11 of the reported drivers committed a crime against road safety and were brought to justice for exceeding the speed allowed on the road by more than 80 km/h, as stated in the Penal Code.

To these results we must add the controls that the different regional and local police forces carried out in their field of competence, a very important collaboration since, in this way, the message of respect for the established speed limits is unified, regardless of the road through which it circulates.
