As reported by the RAE this Thursday, Gómez-Pérez (Azuaga, Badajoz, 1967) will read the speech Artificial intelligence and Spanish language and it will be the director of the Royal Academy, Santiago Muñoz Machado, the academic who will welcome him on behalf of the corporation, a situation of special relevance, which has not occurred in the institution for more than 90 years.

The last occasion took place in 1932 with Ramón Menéndez Pidal and Niceto Alcalá-Zamora.

The decision of the current director to answer Asunción Gómez-Pérez’s speech is due to the highly relevant novelty that the incorporation of an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) implies for the RAE and the consequent use for academic work of a technology that will have an enormous impact on the regulations and use of the language, the academy has explained.

And he recalled the institution’s interest in the study of AI applied to language through the LEIA (Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence) project, led by the RAE since 2019, whose main objectives include making artificial intelligence speak and think in Spanish, and to do it correctly.

The plenary session of the Royal Spanish Academy elected Asunción Gómez-Pérez as an academic in the session of April 7, 2022, after her candidacy was presented by academics Luis Mateo Díez, Pedro R. García Barreno and Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez.

Gómez-Pérez will take possession of the chair qvacant after the death of Gregorio Salvador on December 26, 2020.

Graduated in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Gómez-Pérez received a PhD in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in 1993 and obtained the Chair of Artificial Intelligence at the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 2007.

His career focuses on ontological engineering, semantic web and linked data. The first of these is the branch of artificial intelligence closest to the tasks carried out by the RAE, specifically, the study of vocabulary in all its dimensions.

Ontologies have practical applications in the conversion of linguistic resources (lexicons, thesauri, terminologies) to standard formats for use by artificial intelligence, in text disambiguation and in machine translation, among others.

The new academic appears on the list of the 2% most cited scientists in the world in all areas of knowledge published in October 2022 by Stanford University and in 2018 she was named a member of the expert groups that advise the Spanish Government on artificial intelligence and big data.

Member of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) since 2018, he has received numerous recognitions and awards.
