The connection of the Atocha station with line 1 of the Madrid metro makes this point the most benefited by this extension. Once the works are finished, this infrastructure will become one of the busiest of the 249 in the network, together with those of Sol, Moncloa, Nuevos Ministerios and Príncipe Pío.
The line expansion works began at the end of 2022 (see news) between Plaza Elptica and Conde de Casal. The project of what has been called the “great diagonal” of the network has been divided into three sections. This new axis will connect the city from the southwest to the northeast, between Cuatro Vientos and Valdebebas, cross strategic points such as Atocha, where work is now centered, or the Adolfo Surez-Barajas international airport and link seven of Madrid’s transport interchanges.
The construction of this new facility “involves the dismantling of the tribute monument to the victims of 11-M located in the lobby of the Atocha station.”
