The main facade of the burnt-out historic building of the old stock exchange in Copenhagen has collapsed, Danish authorities said, quoted by AFP.
“Unfortunately, the facade on the Frederiksholms canal has collapsed,” the emergency services said in a post on the X social network. There are no reports of injured people, and the area has been evacuated.
Today, smoke was still rising from the remains of the 400-year-old building after the fire that broke out on Tuesday, which destroyed a large part of the building, according to AFP.
Firefighters battled the fiery disaster for two days. Earlier today, it was reported that they would remain in place for another 24 hours, Reuters reported.
The Danish Chamber of Commerce, which owns the building and used it as its headquarters, has vowed to restore the iconic building. It was built in the 17th century, and until 1974 it housed the Danish stock exchange, BTA reported.
Copenhagen Mayor Sophie Hestorp Andersen said she will travel to Paris next month to study how the Notre Dame Cathedral, which was also destroyed by fire five years ago, has been restored.
