Me Laurent Onyemba, lawyer for the family of Cherubin Okende, filed a complaint on Monday July 17 with the prosecutor’s office near the Kinshasa/Gombe High Court after the kidnapping and then the death of the spokesperson for the political party of Moïse Katumbi, Cherubin Okende. For this lawyer, the circumstances and those responsible for what he describes as the “villainous assassination” of the former Minister of Transport, must be known.
“Chérubin Okende was murdered in unimaginable conditions. The family, after consultation, decided to officially seize Congolese justice so that light is shed on the villainous assassination of the honorable Chérubin Okende. You know that in our country we know about it with surveys. The family has suffered unimaginable harm, hence this complaint for a parallel procedure despite the investigation being carried out at the level of the prosecution. Okende was the father of a large family with nieces and nephews in his charge. This complaint will also allow us to follow the case,” said Laurent Onyemba on leaving the prosecutor’s office.
He also asks that the police officials who have the mission to secure the population be suspended to allow “serenity” during the investigation.
“We agree that we associate international experts. Our wish is that the light is shed. It is absolutely necessary that certain people who have the mission of protecting citizens and their property, that these people who can confuse the tracks of the investigation are already put out of harm’s way to allow peace of mind. In the case of Chebeya, for example, President Kabila had put certain people out of harm’s way so as not to influence the investigation procedure,” he added.
Me Onyemba also protests against statements tending to guide the investigation which, so far, has not yet begun. “As of today, anyone who ventures to make the declarations will be summoned to court to bring the elements into his possession. Whoever is going to cite a political actor or an official as the author of this assassination, will have to come and provide proof of these allegations”, he threatened.
To carry out investigations and shed light on the circumstances and the sponsors of the murder of the national deputy and former Minister of Transport Chérubin Okende, the Congolese government requires Belgium. It is the Minister of State, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals who has been responsible for contacting the Belgian authorities, including the Prime Minister, who has said that his country is ready to delegate its experts.
